Music by Prudence just won the Oscar for Best Documentary short!!!!

Director and producer Roger Ross Williams couldn’t complete his acceptance speech on stage, but here is what he planned to say:

“Thank you, Academy. Thank you, Sheila Nevins, Sara Bernstein, my producer Elinor Burkett and my incredible crew.

And my mother Betty… she got on a plane for the first time in her life to be here – I love you, Mom!

And Prudence Mahbena…

Prudence was born in a country that despises the disabled. Prudence, you had nothing… nothing but spirit, intelligence, and talent. And with your band Liyana you touched us all.

Liyana means It’s raining, which in Zimbabwe is a gift from God.
We don’t always recognize the gifts we get and Prudence, I’m so very happy to be a part of recognizing you tonight.

I love you!!”

  2. CJ Davis

CONGRATS on a well deserved win! I wish Roger Ross Williams had the opportunity to share his acceptance speech with the world. The energy and excitement with which he entered the stage and began to share his experience with the project was sadly muted.

  3. Una

We are SO proud of all of you, especially Prudence!!!

  4. sal

    WOW!!!
I am so happy for everyone who has taken part of this awareness raising and beautiful event.
    sincerely,
    Sal Garza

  5. Jill

CONGRATS, Roger. So happy for you. Your Mom must be so proud of you. Loved your speech, it is ashame you didn’t have the opportunity to speak.
    Best Wishes Jill Gavioli

  6. rosa

Congratulations! Well said… and am utterly disappointed that you didn’t have the chance to share those words during your spotlight.

Elinor Burkett… you should see how many comments you generated by pulling that stunt. You were utterly rude and you should apologize for your juvenile behavior.

  7. Peter Masundire

Congratulations and as a fellow Zimbabwean, I can say to my sister Prudence and all the guys in Liyana, Makorokoto, Amphlope – Hopefully, this win will help raise awareness for people with disabilities in Zimbabwe.

  8. anjani

I just saw Roger win. I was shocked to see that woman, a white woman, so rudely interrupt his speech. I think she said, “let a woman talk.” I’m a woman, and I felt as if this young man, a first time filmmaker should have had a chance to speak. Good outcome. Her rudeness sparked my interest in film. I’ll purchase and send a donation. Roger, Prudence Congratulations. Producer, that woman; get therapy, for goodness sake.

  9. Nancy

CONGRATS!! I cant wait to see it. Your spirit showed through even though you were so rudely interrupted during your speech!

    Shame on you, Ms. Burkett.

  10. ashwin

    congrats all!

  11. Peter Masundire

Can someone tell me who the white woman who interrupted Roger is and how she is connected to the movie? That was the rudest act I ever saw at the Oscars- this was worse than Kanye West crashing Taylor Swift’s award at the Video Music Award last year. Not to throw any racism into this, but I just wonder if this stupid act by this woman will be covered as much as Kanye West’s stupid action!

  12. Mia

My goodness. Congrats on your win, and I’m so sorry that your speech was interrupted — she obviously wasn’t meant to speak, but her interruption was just flat-out rude.

Enjoy your win, and I’m sorry about the unhinged producer. Not all “ladies” behave as such, unfortunately.

  13. Lizwe

To Roger Thank you, thank you for highlighting the plight of our dear Zimbabweans who are less privileged. To you Prudence God created you for a purpose and be proud that you are fulfilling the will of God. We are proud of you dear sister. May our dear Lord bless and protect the band from evil minded people who might want to take advantage of this beautiful talent. Roger thank you again and to your friend who spotted the talent thank you.

  14. Anil

Beautiful words you wrote there. It’s too bad that Elinor Burkett took it upon herself to not allow you to speak them.

  15. Maureen S.

    Congrats, Roger!
Your mom must be bursting with pride…she was so excited while you were working on the documentary. Well deserved.

  16. Kelle Sallard

I am SOOOOOOO proud of my UNCLE ROGER!!!! I lOVE YOU UNCLE ROGE!!!

  17. David Witts

    Makorokoto!/Asengamhlophe!/Congratulations! & Blessings to you all. :)

Had been following from the sidelines for some time as positive stories from Zimbabwe are so rare, alas.

Thank you, and for sharing with the world,
    David.

  18. Makorokoto, Congratulations from Australia! Prudence, you make me so proud to be a Zimbabwean woman.
All the best for the future!
    Regards, Taku

  19. Marlene R.

Roger, I’m sure you’ll be given many opportunities to finish your speech…Kanye West can now rest easy knowing his outburst will be forever overshadowed by the outrageous behavior of Elinor Burkett. While it’s terrible your moment was ruined in a shocking way your talent and accomplishment will shine despite all. Ironically, this sour note was among the few arresting moments of an interminably dull show.

  20. congratulations to you roger. i cannot wait to see your film. what an evening for you, your mom, and prudence, and everyone associated with this project. (i’m very sorry that you were so rudely interrupted by that obnoxious obnoxious self centered “lady kanye”, but you handled her takeover with class).

  21. susane

This was one your most “PRECIOUS MOMENT” but that evil woman stole it away from you.
I do not know her neither do i even want to know any of her role in this award but stay away from her.
Congratulations Roger, you are still a winner in everyones eyes.

  22. Mirror

The lady was Elinor Burkett (co-winner of the award with Roger). She should have waited her turn to talk instead of interrupting. She could have held her Oscar and smiled until he finished, then she could give her speech.

I still don’t understand why Roger and Elinor didn’t walk up together, after all they both won the award.

I think he was just so excited to win, he ran up there and forgot to wait for elinor who was still trying to get out of her row.

  23. Neale Ferguson

Roger….. you won the Oscar! congratulations…..that ghastly, obnoxious attention seeking Producer type has no right to even be in your presence.
We will remember her name for all the wrong reasons.

  24. Disappointed in Elinor

Roger congrats on your win! I’m a so sorry you were interrupted mid sentence but don’t allow that to dampen your spirits!

  25. Bonnie

Congrats Roger on a beautiful documentary! It is a shame that Elinoir Burkitt beahved so rudely but oddly she brought a ton of publicity to “Prudence”- probably many more people will want to see this film than would have without her disturbance.

  26. Heidi

What a beautiful acceptance speech! Congratulations to Roger for his wonderful work. I cannot wait to get the CD and DVD.

I see other comments online tonight criticizing “that white woman” as if her race was the determining factor. I think “that rude outburst” is more accurate. This was a Kanye moment (not “that black man”, but just another “that rude outburst”).

At least turned a lot of new eyes on this documentary and I hope that like Taylor Swift, this means more acknowledgement and more appreciation!

  27. JJ66

Elinor Burkett, as a co-winner, you were of course allowed to give an acceptance speech. But you showed no class by barging in on your co-winner’s acceptance speech. It was rude and crass and a classic example of a poser who thinks she’s more important than she actually is. You need to be called on this sort of bullying behaviour — it may help you in this business in the short term, but your career as a film maker will have a limited shelf life if you continue to behave like this.

Congratulations to Ross and the film — I hope I have the opportunity to see it sometime.

  28. Congratulations!
I am sure you will have many more opportunities to say what you need to say.

  29. Tom

Mr. Williams – Congratulations to you and all those involved in the film.

Ms. Burkett – Please get help.

  30. Anne

I (and for the record, I’m a “white woman”) was also shocked by the rude, classless, selfish and self-gratifying behavior by Elinor Burkett who was determined to make a moment that should have been about the recognition of a film that recorded triumph over incredible odds, all about herself. Shame on you Elinor. There’s a reason only one statue was given out. And what the hell was she talking about, “let the woman speak?” Idiotic, obnoxious blowhard. I can’t imagine what a nightmare she was to work with. Poor Mr. Williams, who was giving an honest, heartfelt and from what I can read here, selfless speech that concentrated on his film’s subject and spirit. Elinor, you may be a woman, but you’re no lady.

  31. Ricochico

Conratulations on winning the award. I’m just wondering why the whole speaking deal wasn’t prepared before?….. Or was it? Do I smell a publicity stunt? I think so! Planned or not it will definitely make for a bigger audience for this special film.

  32. First, thanks Prudence for giving us a little peek into your world and your voice. As a Black disabled journalist, poet, researcher and music historian/produce, I have to say I give my heart to Roger and Prudence for speaking what a lot of disabled musicians go through, discrimination and seeing others speak for us. I’ve been following Prudence and the band for almost three years and now all the light should shine on Prudence, LYANIA and all other disabled people/musicians who get stepped on everyday and are put in the back. Roger, you are something else to team up with a group of disabled musicians and having them teach u. Elinor Burkett, if you are so worried about people with disabilities how about advocating at the Oscars to have Prudence sit in the front row or better yet have her accept the award yeah making the Oscars accessible. Now that is something to snatch the mic for!

Anyway thank u Prudence. Disabled people around the world are so proud of u.

    Leroy Moore

  33. Andrea

So happy for you! I would have loved to hear your speech all the way through, and my heart ached for you when you got cut off. But I’m sure you’re not too worried about that, considering you won an oscar. Congratulations :)

  34. Disgusting Selfishness

Elinor, you dont know everything. stop trying to take over every single thing that comes your way. the reason why you were dismissed from the project was because you were too obsessed with featuring the band rather than the individual artists, and lost sight of the original goal of the film. you should be thankful that Roger included you in his project as much as he did — pretty humbly so too. you should have been grateful enough that your name still remained in the nomination, which lead to you winning an academy award. but no, you had to break the academy’s rule (only one acceptor for shorts), violate the viewers with you disgusting voice, and ruin what was a shinning moment for roger, the rest of the crew, and the incredible cast. you should be kicked out of the academy, and forced to apologize to roger and his mother, and the rest of the cast and crew. good riddance woman, shape up or shut up; its ironic that your film (and “speech”) is against bigots.

Many Congrats ROGER on a job well done :D

  35. Scilla Wahrhaftig

    To Prudence:

We are so proud of you and so excited to see you up there at the Oscars. i just wish the band and all KGVI could have watched.

I phone Mrs. Hussey as soon as I heard – it was 4:00am there time.

    Love Scilla

  36. Christalyn

Congratulations Roger!!! All those long days and crazy hours paid off :0 HBO and your crew was incredible. Many more to come!!!

  37. Congratulations to all of you. You touched my heart and my soul with your documentary and made me so proud to be a Zimbabwean. Prudence you are a star in the truest sense of the word. Thank you for bringing the attention of the disabled in Zimbabwe to the world.
Many blessings to each and everyone of you.

  38. Tre

Congratulations Roger. I couldn’t believe how incredibly rude Elinor Burkett was to cut you off. Tackiest part of the entire ceremony. I can only imagine that she has no clue what she did.

  39. AJ

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!! I Am So Happy !!! You Have Definately Showed & Proved Anything Is Possible!!! Let’s Keep Hope Alive!

  40. Congratulations—saw word of this film on the GMA, delighted to hear of your win! A great story to feature–inspiring.

Sheila Nevins is a godsend to independent film, right?

For God’s sake, get that neurotic Burkett woman out of your business.

    DSS

  41. Ginnie Miles

With tears of joy I salute you Prudence. You make me proud to be Zimbabwean and thanks to Roger for recognizing talent despite the circumstances and show the world what true positive spirit is really like.

  42. for myself, I would have not paid as much attention to the award recipients if the redhead didn’t create a rude obtrusion, now I am reading all about your wonderful short documentary! It was very strange to see it happen and perhaps someone’s intrusion will have a positive result in the end… for the movie…

  43. Juliet

Is Elinor dating Kanye West? They have so much in common.
    Well deserved congrats, Roger!

  44. Michele

Thank you for sharing a breathtakingly inspiring story at a time when we need inspiration, love, light and true beauty. Prudence beaming her beatific smile is a sight to behold–a star brighter than that of the gazilion celebrities in the theater.

Roger Ross Williams, you are a class act, all the way. May this be the launching of an ever-expanding career in film, and may Prudence and her band find a success that lights the way for the darkness of the Zimbabwean mentality on people with disabilities. As is sometimes the case, the *non-disabled* majority is, in fact, more disabled than the *disabled* minority.

  45. Tina

Despite the blatantly RUDE behavior by the clueless female interupter…………remember this films focus is and should be on the incredible survivor PRUDENCE. What a story, what a talent, what a woman, what a miracle. Truly.

  46. miquel

Congratualtions Roger, Prudence, cast & crew… God speed!..

Now–Blackabll that rude women Elinor Burkett!!!!
What did you forget to take your prozac!…disgracefull…

  47. Deno

Congratulations on your win and well done to Prudence. I was shocked that you were prevented from speaking but as someone born in South Africa and now living in the U.S. I am very proud of your achievement for highlighting the struggle and passion of Prudence.

  48. anjela

I think you did so welll to control yourself as that woman was like a stalker hounding you! Very scary stuff- I think you need to protect yourself as she seems so unstable. My god-I was scared and I had a screen and 3000 miles between us.
Congratulations and know that all of us(may I speak for my family and friends) felt you handled it really well. I would have bitch-slapped her. (Just joking)

  49. Sheryl

what a wonderful honor. I have not seen the film and am so looking forward to seeing it!
As Elinor and Kanye have shown us –rude, obnoxious behaviour knows no color/race boundaries!

  50. Nadine

Roger Williams energy and charisma was one of the best parts of the Oscar ceremony. His grace in the face of the grace-less, incoherent interruption of the ” unknown -crazy- woman” only made him more powerful. Even this unpredictable, real, human and theatrical moment was great( really one of the best moments) in the sanitized unreal, artificial and boring rest of ceremony. It certainly attracted our attention and
made me want to see the film. And thanks for introducing us to Prudence
and making sure the Academy included such a moving picure of her.
Thanks for allowing us to to have the full experience now.

  51. I was touched not only by the beautiful story you have created as a film artist . . . but the way you Mr. Williams handled yourself with such grace and dignity at the absolute horror of the redheaded meshugenah that catapulted to the stage and ruined your proud moment. I was so looking forward to hearing what you had to say so I am glad I was able to read it here.

Dear Prudence . . . could the Beatles have been seeing the future when they wrote this song:

Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It’s beautiful and so are you

  52. Rhonda

Congratulations Roger, seen the rude clip and have to say there is always that one in the crowd, the one that thinks they can do it, or say it better, maybe had too many cocktails before the night got started. Listened to the beautiful voice and music of this inspirational woman, can only say, “wow”. Looking forward to seeing this on HBO and purchasing a CD. Best regards ~

  53. Greetings Rodger,
I haven’t seen the film Prudence, and I actually don’t view that many international movies unless a friend recommends it.
However, I now know that the woman who barged upon your acceptance speech was a woman by the name of Elinor Burkett, who was the co-producer.

I couldn’t help but go back some years in my head, to the SOuth African times of disrespect for blacks, their opinions and/or their voice in general. (I felt it hapenning again for a moment) You handled it with CLASS!

It appeared that Elinor felt you were not doing a good enough job! She was rude and extremely disrespectful to you, Prudence, the Academy Organization, and to the quests, fans and the Zimbawe people.

All I can do is pray for this woman!
Only God can humble a person as this and send them to their knees!

    Congratulations!
I intend to see the film.

  54. Loyd

    Hi Rogers,
After watching your emotional walk and trot down to the stage, I had to go check what your documentary was all about- I have been sharing your kind of emotions since. My only wish is that THAT WHITE WOMAN who thought A BLACK MAN cannot speak for himself and a documentary that undoubtedly meant so much to you messed it all up. All of us watching wanted to hear you out.
I have to excuses for racists like her-she may be your greatest c0-producer, co worker etc but she didnt show any respect for your moment in the limelight
    Congratulations once again

Im really happy for your win. Zimbabwe is a beautiful country and has beautiful people in it. There is one thing though; I am not happy with the ” after speech ” comment that reads, Zimbabwe despises the disabled. I am Zimbabwean, which makes me a part of what is Zimbabwe and I carry no ill feelings to any disabled person. The disabled people I know in Zimbabwe are not people who think like handicapped people. Infact they have more will power, confidence and support than people who have no disability and i have enormous respect for them. I hate to use words like them, because where I come from, there is no them in this regard. we are all disabled in someway, but what’s more is that we are ‘able’ in so many other ways and thats what we focus on.We are a loving nation going through a difficult time. To include a loving people in the ugly politics of a nation and then brand us ‘A nation that despises the disabled’ is unfair and cruel. I firmly believe you need to remove that comment and have your PR people find a better way of expressing what it is you meant to say. Thank you for your documentary and everything you have done for the disabled community in Zimbabwe.

  56. Stacey- Judah Ministries

My Dear Prudence, You make me feel like a proud mother. We met in Zimbabwe at King George. When my team came to Zimbabwe to minister. I thank God for having had the chance to meet such a wonder for lady. I pray our paths will cross again. Congratulations. I will never forget you.
Tell Energy and the rest of your group hi for me.
    Blessings,

PRUDENCE AND THE ENTIRE LIYANA FAMILY. YOU ALL HAVE BEEN SUCH A BLESSING IN MY LIFE. SPIRIT, HOPE, COURAGE, DETERMINATION, COMMITTMENT AND FAITH!!!! IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE AND ALSO AN HONOR TO KNOW YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR BLESSINGS TO THE WORLD.

OH YEAH, WE DID HAVE A GOOD TIME IN NEW JERSEY, DIDN’T WE!!!!! LOL!

  58. Ashvin

This is so awesome. Congratulations all.
Eagerly awaiting the album and DVD.

I didnt even know that there was a film called “Music by Prudence” I almost jumped out of my sking when Roger mentioned Zimbabwe before the rude interruption. I am disappointed though that he chose to say “a country that despises the disabled” and bring a general negativity to the people of Zimbabwe. I would acknowledge the difficulties of the disabled in an industry like this and do not undermine the struggles that Prudence has had to endure to pursue her dreams. That statement makes it as if the disabled are deliberately persecuted and banished from society in Zimbabwe as a matter of principle. Am deeplyhurt that once again, out of a positive moment that could bring something to our country, Roger managed to set “us Zimbabwebweans” in a negative way again.

    Prudence… i salute you!!!!!

  60. Matthew

Congratulations to the whole “Music by Prudence” team! I was so touched by the circumstances you had to endure to make this short documentary. Let us forgive Mr. Williams for the slippage of his tongue. Zimbabwe is not a country which despises the handicapped. To an outsider, it might very well appear to be so but then ours is a problem of poverty and great need. Being disabled just stacks the odds against you a little higher- but despise them we don’t! I forgive you Mr. Williams and thank you for the great job your team did. Siyabonga! Tatenda! Thank you!

  61. Francis

I will see the film if at all possible in the UK.

Well done! (shame about the acceptance speech fiasco …what the hell, it will bring more publicity!!).

  62. barbara

your remarks are lovely, and i am so thrilled to find this site, and this place where your words were able to be put out there. i am so very sorry that you were cut off. i was aghast, and tore through the next day’s newspapers trying to find out what that was all about. you were so lovely and gracious. and i am sooooo sorry your moment was pre-empted. i will make sure this film is seen by as many as possible. i can’t wait to absorb it. bless you for the work you do….

  63. Alejandro Salas

    Felicidades!!! desde Monterrey Mexico

I did not watch the Oscars, and I had never heard of you or your music. I was flipping through the channels on TV and I saw you singing ith your Grantmother on HBO. I continued to watch. Your have a beautiful spirit. God truly forms each of us for His purposes. You can reach so many people. Your song about AIDS, your sharing of the reality of God’s love has and will continue to touch many lives. God bless and keep you.
